Hi as a newbie I was enquiring if someone with more knowledgeable could help me identify the forks om my 1966 Atlas as the appear to be the commando type, the yokes are silver in colour and the nut is on the bottom yoke and the pin is attached to the top yoke. The bottom legs only have a stanchion collar with no chrome sleeve. The legs are also fitted with gaitors. I need to change the stanchions so how can I identify them so that I order the right ones. If they are not correct is there any benefit in keeping the commando set up and can I fit a standard steering damper to these yokes.
Thanks in anticipation of any assitance or clarification
Atlas forks
Hi Phillip
Thanks for your help I have measured them and they are 555mm or21.85 inches so must be the short roadholder stanchions. Which is strange as they have the commando yokes and and lock rings on the lower tubes. Is there any benefit with the commando yokes that you know of.
Many thanks
Neal

Just probably available and…
Just probably available and fitted by someone who knew what they were doing as they fitted the correct length stanchions. You need to review offset etc to see if they are an improvement or a backward step. You also need to check the damper rods and damper bodies to see if they have been modified to Short Roadholder or left as Commando. They made an error in the Commando rods and damper bodies allowing for a top out clunk when put on centre stand, the shorter stanchion may negate that.

Sounds like they are from a Commando. Which might mean they have longer stanchions and Damper tubes.
Below is a comparison of stanchion lengths. An Atlas should be fitted with Short Roadholder Stanchions.
Stanchion Lengths
Long Roadholder 23.312 inches
Commando 23.161 inches
Short Roadholder 21.843 inches (includes Manx 51-55)
Manx 1956 onward 20.375 inches
G15 030036 25.000 inches
P11 022823 23.250 inches
You will probably find that any replacement stanchions do not match the above lengths by up to 0.25". It depends who you purchase them from. Go for a reputable dealer but still measure them yourself before fitting.
