Hi All,

Following on from some comments made at the AGM, I am thinking of making some 'absolute basics' video's. These would not be professionally done, just a hand held camera or phone. Minimal editing and released via youtube. 

The only machines I have to work on for such things are an 850MkIII Commando and a Navigator Delux. Subjects I am thinking initially of are:-

Basic tool kit (enough to do the basics mentioned in the video's). May just do this at the front of each video.

Engine Oil Change including filter.

Gearbox oil change.

Checking and Adjusting the tappets.

Checking and Adjusting the rear chain.

There are obviously many more.

What I am after is, anyone else want to have a go at such a thing? Other models and other procedures.

What other basic procedures should be covered?

Tony, the lifesaver, a regular simple and easy check over of the bike. Surprising that many wait until bits fall off that could have otherwise been tightened or avoided a breakdown.

Hi Ashley,

Give me your quick list and I will put it into  script. Base on Commando 850 MkIII for obvious reasons.

Good idea!  More and more people don't have access to the old bloke next door...

Maybe changing brake shoes (without removing too many fingers, and without pumping grease from the mounting peg nipples all over the inside of the drum...).

And front chain adjustment for bikes with adjustable engine-to-gearbox gap.

Head bearings, for all ages of machine

Girder fork spindle adjusters (those are a mystery until you know how they go together...)

Without wishing to throw cold water, there's  lot of such stuff already around.

A newish recruit to the Sunbeam forum did a series on his Model 8 and did come in for a certain amount of stick as he didn't really have a clue. It starts here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oal7mImPANE

One problem was that he was a somewhat irritating character (which I'm sure you're not)

Can I suggest that balancing twins carbs and checking ignition timing be added to the list? 

For those more ambitious DIY people you could also consider changing a crankshaft oil seal, servicing and adjusting a clutch, ditto for brakes and also a front forks oil change.

We should all get recording! Problems... 1) my bikes are so reliable they never need attention (!!)  2)I'm not sure I want my working methods to be visible to others!

... in general and I've always found the workshop manuals quite adequate. The problem I see with youtube and the like is that it would need a computer / tablet etc in the garage whereas with the paper manuals I can photocopy relevant sections.

I know, I'm not keeping up with the times......
