Some gearboxes need you to hold the gear change lever up with your foot (assuming a down change is up on your bike) until you have released the clutch.
By the way, you don't play bass in Fairport Convention do you?

Not only BMW, Stan. My brother had a Yamaha DT175 that wouldn't go into top unless you held the lever up until the clutch was released.

Is the problem with the shift, i.e. you pull the gear lever up and it just moves freely up to the stop without engaging with the selector mechanism? If so, pull the outer cover and adjust the pawl spring.
If you can feel the lever engaging but it doesn't want to move then clutch drag can make the box reluctant to leave the gear it's in and, 'cos you're pulling up rather than stamping down on the gear lever, it can be more noticeable when shifting down. Try adjusting the clutch to the manual.
