'71 Fastback Tail Piece picture

Forums

Is it possible someone could post a picture of the underneath of the tail piece please.  I have managed to buy one now.  I knew it had damage to be repaired.  It's a bit of a mess where a frame fixing stud has been pulled through the fibreglass. I've enclosed a pic of what I have.  Many thanks in advance

Area to be repaired

Steve many thanks, fantastic.  Measurements would be good.  I suppose distance between the two studs would be handy, and approximate angle of the forward stud. There must be a captive nut in the fibreglass mould I suppose to locate the stud.  I'm thinking that the one I have has been overtightened and pulled through.  How does the tail piece fix to the frame.  I've recently bought a basket case Fastback so am getting familiar with everything.

many thanks

The tailpiece attaches to the frame with a bracket, part no 06.0506

The bracket is secured by two 5/16 UNF studs, part no 06.0779, these are similar to the carb manifold studs if you have spares.

So, you need to embed a 5/16 nut and a penny washer to spread the load into the tail.

I think rather than using measurements and angles, the best route would be to get the bracket and studs and use these as a positioning guide for your work. Once you have these all becomes clear.

Speaking personally, I would use something like JB Weld to set the nut and washer in place and then cover with a thin layer of fibreglass.

I’m halfway through my restoration, turning an Interstate into a Fastback. Even if you have the manuals and restoration books, I find the parts book to be the best source to identify the parts and the order of assembly.

Steve many thanks for your input again.  Everthing is a lot clearer now and makes sense.
