Hi All,
My rev counter cable looked in bad shape as the outer casing was deteriorating so I ordered a new one from Andover which arrived today. No problem until I tried to connect the new cable into the rev counter only to find it would not engage. It appears part of the square drive end of the old cable has broken off inside the rev counter and as yet I can’t get it out.
Any ideas much appreciated or can anyone recommend someone who can repair it?
Photo’s attached but probably don’t help too much.
Thanks and Regards
Phil

There is only about 1mm of the old cable square end left so can’t grip it John. Also, it spins around so can’t screw anything in to it. Thanks though.

Phil, I have several of these rev counters in bits. I can look in the morning to see what you might be able to do, if you like?

Phil, Sorry for the delay…
Phil,
Sorry for the delay in sending photos - the parts were in storage. So here is the Veglia rev counter internal assembly. It does not appear that even when exposed like this that there would be any way to access and remove the broken off cable square drive. Extracting from outside does seem the only way, which at least means stripping is not required.

Take a length of square…
Take a length of square steel that fits the cable hole in the bottom of the tacho and is long enough to be proud so you can get a spanner onto it. Then drill through the centre a hole large enough for a self tapper or a thread tap to pass through. Insert square steel, hold stationary with spanner and then insert self tapper/threading tap and try to engage into the broken cable and finally pull.

Hi Andy, …
Hi Andy,
Thank you very much for the photos and your time which is very much appreciated. Unfortunately I have still been unable to remove the broken cable end piece. I took it to my local motorcycle repair shop (very good and highly experienced) and they also could not find a way of removing it. I think the only solution is to replace the whole drive with a replacement part as per your photo. To that end I have sent it off to a specialist company with the hope they have suitable used replacement parts they can fit to repair the rev counter. It’s my only hope really as replacement used Veglia’s appear to be non-existent.
Regards
Phil

Rare earth magnet
Phillip,
I'm just throwing this one out there but maybe if you could get a small rare earth magnet and try and sliding it up and down the outside. Even better if you get one small enough to fit in the square.
Also try pouring boiling water over the metal and giving it a tap.
In Aust. You can get the magnet from electronics shops.
