16H WD magneto

Forums

I have an anti-clockwise mag that I got with a 16H WD (1942) project bike. According to the 'list of proprietary equipment' supplement for 1941, the bike should have a clockwise mag (MO1/4/AG4). Is it possible to convert an anti-clockwise mag to clockwise or will I need to get another unit?

Thanks.

It is possible to convert it but a number of components at the points end will need to be changed (and the dynamo should be anti-clock). If you're having the unit professionally restored then most restorers would accept it as a donor and fit the parts that you need.

If you want it to look correct, the HT pickup will need to be next to the cylinder and the unit will be tight-wire advance with the cable on the left. These units can be quite hard to find as owners of things like BSAs like to convert their anti-clock mags to slack-wire advance.

Gulp. I have converted the MO1 on my B31 to slack-wire advance with autojumble bits as I want a broken cable to fail to fully advanced rather than fully retarded. Just nipping out to lash myself with nettles.

Nice to see Richard and Gordon having an interplay here. Just to finish this post, I will not add any thing re mags I know very little-never catch on-you need non wearing electronic!

Dynamos- these are relatively easy to change direction. You need to reverse the relationship/phasing between the armature and the Field. Ie you reverse the two field wires OR reverse the two brushes. Obviously you then have to re-polarise and off you go. If you get it wrong then no matter how hard you 'pedal' you do not get any output. (unless you reverse its direction!) This state of affairs can happen if you try converting a 'Bosch' type connections (inside the dynamo) to Lucas connections (or vice versa). If trying this trick you might get perplexed with no output if you don't reposition both Field wires (or brushes). Again this sort of thing can happen if you have an old JG regulator (early electronic regulator built into a 'mouse's' coffin) and want to revert back to Lucas connections. (perhaps when using one of A O Services nice regulators!)
