It looks like I may need to replace the head gasket on my Atlas. Does the head need to come off to remove the pushrods?

Hi Jim,

I take it you have a workshop manual? It should help you a lot. It explains how pushrod need to be kept up in the head as far as possible when removing the head.

In the Technical section of this website, under the 'Heavy Twins', 'miscellaneous' then in the green 'hints and tips' section, there is a tip written by Mike Taglieri titled "Techniques for easier removal of cylinder heads" type that into the search and it will take you to it.

Mike suggests using cable ties to hold the pushrods up in the head. My experience is that this works really well and you should consider using this method.

You also need to keep checking the head fixings  till they settle down fully. Avoid stainless bolts as they can be stretchy !!.

Yes I have a manual. Is there enough room for the head to come off while the engine is still in the frame?

Hi Jim,

There is on a 650SS, so can see no reason why not on an Atlas. The truly hard bit is keeping the pushrods up enough to not catch on the tunnels as you lift and roll the head backwards to remove it. Same as for reassembly. Keeping the pushrods up and located in the rockers is a challenge but is doable.  Don't force it  or a pushrod will get bent!

I've taken a few Dommie heads off in situ. It helps if you can grow a few extra fingers before you start, or at least longer fingers!

But seriously though, it can be done. I even managed it with an 850 engine in a Slimline, mounted upright a la Atlas. Just be prepared to take your time.
