There was a book published a while back about overhauling speedos. It was written by the author of Improving Classic Bikes, so this may be of help to you when you try to rebuild your own one. If not send it to Ashley as he has been repairing those Smith clocks for over 30 years. He has repaired the clocks on all of my own bikes.

If the speedo has mileometer and odometer it is most likely a Veglia instrument. You may have a hard time finding anything for these.

If it all gets too much you could do a lot worse than go to Ashley Pople. He certainly knows his stuff. He renovated my mid-fifties ES2 speedo for me at a reasonable cost.

This book was self published and I bought my one from the author direct.

The book that you want is Magnetic Speedo Repair, and it is the definitive guide to the repair and calibration of Smiths SSM series speedo's and RSM rev-counters. It is a fix it your self book, and instruments can be calibrated on the bike or on an easy to build rig. It gives full instructions, in every step of the way. No specialist tools are required, just a cycle computer. It was sold or may be still is by the VMCC  under part number B152 and it was £15.
