My rebuild/restoration of a '62/3 650SS is progressing apace. I'm aware that originally, this bike would have been fitted with a pair (well, one and a half) of Monoblocs. I don't have any of those but I do have a pair of 30mm Mk1 Concentrics. I don't expect that I'm the only one to fit these, so how do you get a spanner on the two nuts between the carbs? They are reduced hexagon nuts but with the concentrics in place, getting any sort of spanner on seemed impossible. The 'unused' casting for the throttle stop screw and air screw get in the way.
I know this will horrify a number of people but I removed some of the unused carburettor casting and also reduced to outside diameter of a 3/8" drive 3/16" Whitworth socket. With that done I could just about get the nuts tightened.
When Concentric carbs were fitted as standard in '67 or so, was anything else changed to facilitate the fitting of them?

Standard fitment with twin…
Standard fitment with twin carbs was with three studs+nuts, plus a socket head screw on one of the centre fixings, for this reason. The first one can be tightened with a spanner but the inner on the second needs the screw.

Hi- John, Billy and David,…
Hi- John, Billy and David, the 5/16 inch BSW cap-headed Allen bolt was also used on the standard fit monoblocs. The right-hand chopped carb was secured by the two studs with hex-reduced nuts and reduced o/d washers whilst the left-hand standard monobloc used the Allen bolt for the centre fixing and the stud for the outer (with the reduced hex nut etc). Good luck, Howard

Ahh... I did wonder about that. Thanks for your replies.
Whilst on the subject (more or less)... my petrol tank only has one 1/4" BSP outlet. Any recommendations for a main / reserve petrol tap?

It's possible to buy a fuel tap with off-main- reserve all in one unit. I have a single tap on my tank and always reset the trip odometer to zero after every fill up. Once you know the bikes mpg you also know when it's time for a fill up. I admit it's crude but it does work for me John

Sorry John didn't mean to sound like a dictator please accept as a suggestion only. It did work for me.

Unserstood, William. I have to do that on my VFR as the fuel gauge is wildly inaccurate :)

Reduced Nuts
My 1965 Atlas had twin 930 Concentrics and was fitted with reduced nuts on the inner carb studs.
The removal procedure started with a small but longish open end spanner held horizontally on one nut. That spanner being turned using another spanner or bar on the free end. The first complete turn was painfully slow to manage but generally after this a finger would spin the nut fairly easily.
Replacing the small nut require a screwdriver shaft or thin rod for it to slide into position taking care not to cross-thread it.
Paul Goff used to sell quality lever fuel taps which gave a small reserve on a Dominator tank.

Extract from parts list…
Extract from parts list shows 3 studs + 3 nuts + 3 washers, and one fixing screw (without a washer).

Yes, I realise that now... I bought a "Carburettor fixing kit" from a well respected Norton spares supplier that consisted of 4 studs, 4 reduced nuts and 4 washers. I'll know, next time...

It's fairly common practice to file a bit off the blank bosses, to fit Concentrics parallel.

I have Concentrics on my 650SS. To get around this problem I used Allan bolts instead of norm bolts and no longer a problem, no other modification required. Good luck
