Sticky gear selector

Forums

After a gearbox rebuild I throughly checked the gear selection (without the outer case components). I rebuilt and all seemed fine. Selecting gears going up through the change is slick. Getting first and N is a pig. The gear change level seems to stick.

I have tried to attach small video but managed a few stills. Any recommendations where to start. Inner and outer casings are new by the way.  Thanks.

I adjusted the primary chain tension which didn’t make a difference. Took the outer cover off and it seems to be all ok. The selector pawl looks more worn on one side so going to replace this along with the 1 1/2” washer.

I would second Robert’s suggestion of the pawl spring. I recently rebuilt my Dommie’s AMC gearbox and when I put the outer cover on I couldn’t get any gears at all - the gear lever moved up and down by a couple of millimetres but wouldn’t select a gear.
To cure the problem I bent the upper leg of the pawl spring down slightly at the point where it touches the pawl so that there is a gap between the leg of the spring and the pawl. That gives you a bit of free play in the pawl (i.e. it can waggle up and down on its pivot with neither leg of the pawl spring touching it) AND the face of the pawl can move so that it is exactly parallel with the pawl spring plate. Once I’d done that, I got a perfect gear change.

Good luck.

Tony

As Tony describes, the pawl spring, when brand new, always needs adjusting - (I recall the books describing it as 'setting') otherwise it invariably has no clearance with the pawl itself and in this state will give either little or no gear selection.

Hopefully an easy 'fix'.

Cheers Phil loads of good info.

Hi thanks for the information. I had already removed the outer cover and checked the spring was the correct way and was clear of the pawl. I noticed polishing marks where the spring meets the lever. I flattened this off replaced the pawl and the spacer washer. On rebuilding the outer components I noticed the clearances were much better. Mounted it on the bike all gears great!
