New layshaft bush, no oil hole

Forums

Early type gear box.

Just received a new layshaft bush for the driving side crankcase The old bush has a oil hole, the new one has no hole just a cut away in the flange. Do I drill the hole myself, what is the cut away for.

Thanks

John.

Managed to drill the oil hole for the bush and have now fitted it, bit of Loctite applied first, now tight in the case. The problem I have is that the layshaft is now very tight in the bush, took me about twenty minutes to get it out. Does the bush require reaming.

Was it tight before you drilled it? I'm wondering if you have a burr? If not and its too tight then I'd say it needs to be reamed, but where did you get it? If it was made for the shaft it should fit?

Purchased it from Norton spares. The bush did turn on the shaft before I fitted it, but now its in the gearbox and with the layshaft fixed it is a bit tight, cannot turn the layshaft by hand. Did make sure after drilling it that there was no burr.

You could try a tip from the classic car rallying scene and gently lap the layshaft into the bush using a smear of valve grinding paste. Make sure you carefully wash out the bush and layshaft before final assembly. This should give you a very precise fit.

If the end of the shaft shows signs of wear I would polish it up with a strip of emery to improve the fit as it will last longer that way. I would keep abrasives away from porus bushes if possible. The best job would be to clean and true up the shaft and ream the bush to it. But thats just a dream for most of us.
