I have a 1974 850 interstate (although i think it was originally a JPN) and I am looking for someone near Leominster or Bromyard to set up the ignition timing and carbs.
does anyone know of anyone who can help?

Hi Darren,
sorry for the delayed response i have been in Newcastle looking after our old aunt.
i found a trailer but then realised i changed my car and the new one has no tow bar "DOH"
i have bought a strobe light and a timing disc and set disc at 28 degrees before TDC and set the Lucas RITA ignition up with the recommended 5mm gap
the timing disc reads 38 degrees before TDC but when i put the casing on the built in marks say 38 degrees before TDC. am i doing something wrong?
cheers
Mick

You'll need a strobe to set…
You'll need a strobe to set the ignition timing whether it's points or electronic. You cant rely on the timing plate in the primary chaincase for accuracy. I removed mine and marked the stator with T.D.C and 31 deg. B.T.D.C for the Boyer ignition at 5,000 rpm. If the carbs are the old Amal Concentrics with some miles on them you'll never get a reliable idle speed due to wear between the slides and bores. Amal premiers are the way to go. To accurately balance the slides you'll need a vacuum gauge. I'm 35 miles away and can do the work.
Simon.

RITA is set statically by…
RITA is set statically by turning the engine to 28 deg. BTDC then fitting the reluctor in the end of the camshaft so that it just traps the 5mm spacer behind (in the direction of camshaft rotation) the pickup centre.
You should find when you start the engine that the advance is about 20 deg. BTDC at 2000. Adjust to 28 deg. BTDC at high revs, something over 4000.
If you have used a degree disc to set the engine to 28 deg. adjust the scale in the primary cover to match. If there is not enough adjustment in the scale then you have a problem with the marks on the alternator rotor.

Worcestershire Branch meet at Malvern. See the magazine for details. I'm sure someone there could help. I'm in Kidderminster, a bit further away.
