Crankshaft end float

Hi all, Can anyone tell me what the ideal crankshaft end float should be on a Mk3?
  The bike has been on the road, after a rebuild with new roller bearings both sides of the crank. I have the primary cover off at the moment to attend to an oil leak but in my travels I noticed the crankshaft end slop. I have measured it with a dial gauge, it is around 0.016".
 Any expert opinions would be gratefully accepted

Has anyone ever taken down a Mk3 engine other than one they built themselves and found any shims ? I have the distinct impression that the factory didn't shim them.

I always aim for .012"
