Candy Apple Red, colour codes did not exist at the time, at least not in a modern form, but Candy Apple Red is a very common colour even today. Candy paint is a method, first you paint a base colour eg silver of gold followed by a number of coats of a coloured transparent lacquer which allows the base to still show through. It can be copied by going for a metallic but that will miss out the effect of the sun falling at different angles on the paint causing changes on how the base comes through. The number of coats of top lacquer changes how deep the colour is so even if you have an exact copy the thickness and number of coats need to be matched.
At the time the colours were badly affected by the sun and lost the effect, modern candy's are now colourfast and also you can add a 2K clearcoat for further protection.
