After just a handful of starts the sprague clutch retaining nut undoes itself. I use the correct torque setting (65 to 70 lbs ft) and also use Locktite, but it has happened four times in the last two months. There is no back-firing, which can be a cause for the nut to come undone.
Any ideas? Is there a safer higher torque setting?

sprague clutch nut
John, what a useful reply. I will go the larger spacer route, and add a few lbs ft while I am at it.
Now my new knee has bedded in I can start it quite happily on the kick start, so the Alton has become a bit of a luxury anyway.
Cheers,
Andy

No, the surface area needs…
No, the surface area needs increasing which the spring washer with the single split will not.

Its seems to be an issue to others too, maybe the nuts threads are not well formed and the torque figure is off due to the extra force needed, regardless once loose the starter drive is then directed through the rotor key which shears, as it is sized only for location purposes only, not to take the drive from the starter. Over on Access Norton Yves had a plate made so the starter drive is sent over to the 2 threaded holes in the engine sprocket which has a taper that can handle the torque of the starter. If Alton do not come out with a proper fix for this then the CNW starter will take over as the one to use. Another temporary fix is to use a large washer under the flange nut so the torque on the nut is spread over a larger area.
