Have a bit of a dilemma here as I'm not getting any further forward.

I've had to buy a new brake drum due to the sprocket worn out. I've measured it and exactly the same As my old one.

When I put it in using everything that came out, it compresses the brake back plate against the drum.

the wheel spindle is in 2 partsand no matter what I do to that it is exactly the same however when I did take it out, it was partially unwound which I thought this cannot be right.

When it's all built up on the workshop floor, there is end float movement of approximately 6 mm.

Obviously, when I put the wheel  in the inevitable is going to happen, it just pushes the back plate into the brake drum.

With these pictures, is there anything missing because obviously the smaller part of the spindle has to go against the bearing so I have to shim out the back plate..

Please can someone help as I am not going anywhere with it and the only thing I can do is to put multiple shim to push it out but it just doesn't seem right.

I'm Portishead and if someone would like to pay me a visit, I will pay them for their time and energy and experience of course:))

The first picture I've attached is how the spindle should look to make it all work.

The second picture is how the spindle ends up which clearly tightens it too much against the drum.

Hi Barry, It can only go one way as it's a large collar on the inside which goes against the bearing so it cannot go the wrong way. Mine is exactly the same as your picture. Please keep ideas coming:)))

Barry, I would like to know if that collar sticking up in both our pictures... Is that collar movable up and down on yours? Because mine does and I think that is the issue it needs a spacer between the collar and the brake backing plate

After head scratching and measuring everything I didn't actually measure the obvious part.. Do you know when you've been in the garage too long:))

It was the lip on the outside of the new brake drum was different to the original. I bought it from British only Australia with the correct part number, but now I'm gonna have to get someone with the lathe to take it down..

The first picture is the old one, but the correct depth.

I had a similar problem when I renewed the drum on mine with a knocking noise as I spun the wheel, eventually I found the large rivet heads inside the drum were touching the brake shoe pivot bolts. I ended up adding a shim to the bearing spacer to move the brake plate out a fraction.

That's interesting. It does seem to be some of these new components are marginally or fractionally different as I am finding out..

Good to know Geoff!
