If unable to turn the knob
Years since I had one, but quite certain it has a threaded metal insert. As the rod is threaded both ends, you could try with WD40 applied daily on both ends for a couple of days. Heating the knob will probably not work as bakelite is a good thermal insulator. Using pipe pliers on the knob stem might work. If knob then can be turned but can't be removed bottom rod end is free to turn, There is a spring and one or two nuts under the fork stem top nut. Top nut has to be loosened.

hello, update on the damper…
hello, update on the damper knob . tried to undo it by locking the two nuts together on the shaft, it didnt turn. put a bit more force on it, the shaft snapped just level with the knob and cracked the knob, all fell bits. they are ultra tight no chance of undoing them. i should have just cut it off and drilled it out. i think i will see if i can rescue it with some JB weld. if all else fails i might get a chain for it and wear round me neck . It is a threaded item, it ought to simply unscrew. Like a lot of things that have not been disturbed in years, decades even, it can be very reluctant to come off.
Being bakelite, I have no idea if WD40 or similar will assist, least of all if still on the bike, as anything sprayed will only dribble off and not into the thread.Although there might be a threaded steel insert? Long time since I last looked at one.
Gentle warming with a hot air gun might assist, or grab the wife's hairdryer when she's not looking.
Dont even think about a blowlamp!
