RGM large bore exhaust system

Hello there

Recently I bought RGM's large bore exhaust pipes and silencers, which should utilise standard brackets. The ones I recieved are not even close to the brakets (see attached picture).

Has anyone experience with this exhaust system?

I got rid of mine and now use a Norman White Norton exhaust and Andover Peashooters. The power delivery is much better. The RGM pipes were unbelieveably loud though, even louder than the average Harley!!

BTW - I like the look of your Mk3 rearsets - have you some details that I can look at as I'd really like some for my Mk3?

Thanks for the response. I have sent a mail to RGM, trying to find out how to fit system, without using a large hammer.

Regarding the rearsets, it is my own desing (I did the paper work and my brother the hardware work). I have have attached a more detailed picture of the sets.

If you are interested, I have still got the drawings (dirty and a few burns). But it should be possible to make some usefull copies.

Personally I wouldn't even attempt to modify the pipes to make them fit, send them back for ones that do fit or a refund.

yes you could make them fit, you can make almost anything fit but these are miles out i would send them straight back!!.............regards Nick

Thank's for the response.

I talked to RGM today. They told that it was quite normal that the pipes was like these!! ?? Ã?h nÃ?. The solution was to fit them to the head and tighten the exhaust nuts, use a rod and straighten the pipies by pressing down slowly. No problem, have been done lots of times. OK !! I will think about that a day or two, and then deside what to do.

Hi Leif. I WOULD STRONGLY ADVISE THAT YOU DO NOT BEND THEM WHENTHE PIPES AREFITTED INTO THE HEAD!!!!!!!!

Looking at your photos, the pipes seem to be a long way out and will need to be bent enormously. The pressure you will create at the head will be magnified immensly by the length and leverage of the pipe and enough to seriously damage thehead, possibly stripping the exhaust port threads.

Do as Nick and Simon says and send them back. Make sure you get RGM to pay the postage too. I know it will be a tremendous bother but you have NO option.

Looking at the engle it seems the end flange at the engine end has been cut at the wrong angle, youcannot bend this out, and remember the engine is rubber mounted and you must not have any pre-loading on the rubber mounts, the pipes must fit exactly without any stress.

Don't even think about it. If all of us continue to accept goods from suppliers which are not fit for purpose, they will continue to send them out. Some time and money wasted on justifiable refunds will help to focus their minds on selling us decent stuff that works.

Just looking again at your photo. I'm not sure what range of big bore pipes RGM sell, but it looks like they might well be designed to fit the Featherbed such as a 650SS or an Atlas. Perhaps you have ordered the wrong type?or RGM have sent you the wrong ones? Check your receipt and the ITEM number and refer back to their catalogue.

All of you are right, the pipes should go back. Les, I checked the order history, all numbers are OK.

I talked to a danish Norton workshop and part supplier about the problem. Inaccuracies in the range of 10-15mm could be fixed the way RGMdescribes, but as much as mine are out.... no way.

Further he told (without putting any names on) that it was not unusual that people here in Denmark had received odd parts from UK suppliers. It is of course an easy way to get rid of the odd parts: it's expencive to return them, damm.. I need the part right now, there is a long way to the UK,it is cumbersome to complain......... and so on, with the result that people decide to modify the parts themselves.

The price for returning the pipes is £50,-, and if RGM refuse to refund the postage......hmmmm.

I will write another mail to RGM, telling that I bought a complete exhaust system that should utilise standard brackets and that I won't run the risk of bending the pipes using the cylinder head. I will ask for a refond of allexpenses and then wait to see what they will answer.

Hi I live in Australia ,i have purchased parts from a UK supplier and found 2 parts with the same problem (didn't fit ),the answer was send them back (cost about 40 p ound to receive them and 40 to send them back).

I purchased engine pipes from USA ,the right pipe didn't fit (they never said bend them ) they supplied 3 r/h pipes in total before i was happy .(never once asked for return of pipes )

I think some UK suppliers need to pull there sox up and start to give a Thing called SERVICE TO BUYERS .

I too purchased a pair of large bore pipes for my 850 interstate from RGM. They were not as bad as yours but would not fit without fouling the engine casings. One side was worse than the other. I returned them to RGM and they gave me a full refund but I lost out on the postage. Andy.

I've only ever had good service from RGM, but what you describe is apalling! If you had decided to return the pipes because you'd changed your mind and wanted something different, then fair enough, you should pay postage both ways.

However, in this case, they are responsible for sending you shoddy goods, and the cost of outgoing and return postage should be borne by RGM, not you.

I would challenge RGM on this, and don't give in!

Hello all

Just an update on the exhaust pipe issue.

This is the last I heard from RGM 2 weeks ago (theyreceived the parts4 weeks ago):

"we have received the system back, as I understand it you maintain it is faulty and have asked for your postage back, that is fair enough of course but we just need to establish that it is faulty, and not simply awkward or not suitable for the brackets you use etc, we have brought the jIg down ( it was in storage as some building work has been done) we just need to set the jig up on a suitable bench and then we will be able to check it. I am sure we will have it checked if not before then certainly over the coming weekend"

I answered that my reference is the photos of the pipes fitted to my Commando, so why don't they check the pipes on a Commando instead of chekking the jig (I did not buy a jig....), hereafter I have pulled for a status several times but nothing happens.

I know this is a forum for technical issues, but part quality and supplier service are important for all who want to keep their Norton's on the road. A page were buyers could review parts and suppliers might be an idea for the NOC web site.

Well done Leif. Keep the pressure on them! As I stated in a previous reply, I have only ever had good service from RGM, but this does not excuse them from the responsibility to sort out their problems.

Their comment about the jig is a joke - how would a customer know if the jig is accurate or not? Your suggestion to try the pipes on an actual Commando is the logical solution (and would give RGM far more credibility!)

As far as I know (and excluding one-offs), all pipes are made on jigs, but how many times do we hear of poor fitting pipes (from various suppliers?) Either the jigs are wrong or thepeople making the pipes are inept.

Or is the answer that the jig is correct and your bike has been made incorrectly......

This is the point, where a company with a well organized and customer oriented set-up would say: "We are truly sorry for delivering a part that doesn't fit your bike. We will of course re-imburse your expenses, and look forward to doing business with you again." This would trigger at least two positivethoughts in you:1. This is a serious and well organized business caring forme,by being readytake back a faulty part. 2. This experiencehas convinced me to come back and do business another time.

Theirpresent actualactions have only left you dissatisfied, like you're being accused of being sloppy or downright a difficult customer. By choosing the above solution RGM could have created a satisfied customer, and probably spent less time and money in doing so, instead of setting up jigs, and performing tests, that are not related to real life application.

Here comes the final salute from RGM:

"With regards to the returned exhaust system we now have these pipes mounted on our exhaust jig and these fit fine the only thing is the bike does not have any primary chain cases on but would not think this would make much difference to this exhaust system. although we do not have time to mount the chain cases to the jig at the moment as we are extremely busy we will refund you in full and check these again when we have more time"

So I got a full refund including p&p. But it could sound like I am a difficult customer, despite that I during the past 17 years have spend +£4700 at RGM's....... never mind. I have bought a pair of standard 1 3/8" pipes from Frode SÃ?rensen here in Denmark. Perfect fit, excellent chrome maybe a little loud together with 1 1/2" reverse cones, but that's it.... end of story.

It's good to hear that your persistence paid-off!

It is just a pity that RGM took so long before resolving things, and also made it sound that it was done so begrudgingly.
