So being a newbie to the qwerks and wonders of classic bikes... filled by bike (I didn't think I'd overfilled it), went to marshall at Poole bike night and put the bike on the side stand....luckily (!) came back approx 30 mins later wondering why it stinks of fuel around my bike and looked down the left side to see fuel running out onto the floor!!!
Good job that not so many people smoke nowadays or a fair few bikes may have gone up!!
Who thought that putting the filler cap on the same side of the tank to the side stand was clever?!

By the early 60's the filler had been moved to the right for this reason. Someone might know the date.

I read a post that the filler is on the left to facilitate filling on the side stand and therefore avoid overfill. I guess its safer than my bad habit of sitting on the bike while filling. Lesson learned.

Most early bikes did not…
Most early bikes did not have side stands ,so LH fillers made sense with the way pumps were oriented against the garage walls .

Probably an issue with the state of the cork washer in the cap, or the surface of the steel it mates to, or the spring pressure on it.
