What is the concensus on the real need for this 'upgrade' for 68-74 Commandos?
I understand why it's better but is it really necessary with the sort of relatively gentle use that my bike is likely to get?
That said, the bike is disassembled and undergoing restoration ...but it does hurt me to pay the prices asked for the required bits and the work involved.
Interested in your pragmatic opinions.

If you have a good pin in a…
If you have a good pin in a good bore then cotter pin or other conversion will not do much for you. But if the engine plates are well used the bore will be worn and even a new pin will wobble around. Cotter pin location compensates for this. Depends how far gone yours is but it doesn't take much slack to ruin the handling.
If you're happy with the handling, don't bother. If you'd like to tighten it up there are several options. While you have the bike in pieces, welding a couple of pieces of tube to the engine plates Mk3 style isn't a big job and shouldn't cost much. Have the bore reamed to an oversize pin while you're at it.

The clamps Francis pictured are Kegler clamps and a low cost but very effective solution, most new spindles come with the cotter pin slots in them and these Kegler clamps fit these with just the drilling of the old cradle needed.
