Have re-assembled my '55 laydown box as Mike hemmings excellent DVD sevral times. I can almost now do it with my eye shut!
All goes well until I fit the outer casing at which pint the gear lever refuses to move.
I've checked the gears and pinions for correct location; set the cam plate to neutral (selector one click down from top (1st)); set the pawls on the selector mechanism to the mid-position but all to no avail.
What am I missing?
All suggestion will be taken on board!
George
It may be an outer cover issue

Does the kick-start turn the gears inside? A clean change needs the dogs to line up, and they won't do so unless the gears are rotating.

It was a cam-plate timing issue
Following investigation this morning I think I've found the prob. In turning with the bolts holding the camplate and the camplate quadrant in order to find neutral I had inadvertently changed the "timing" of the two by somehow getting the quadrant to slip on the cam-plate gearing.
I explain this only for the benefit of anyone else who finds they have a similar problem.

so I would suggest undoing the cover screws and loosen the outer cover. See if the selector works normally. If still no joy, try again with the cover removed entirely. It may be that the positive stop mechanism is not quite seated correctly, or some part is misplaced causing a jam against the cover. Look carefully to see where there may be a witness showing where contact is being made.
