I am rebuilding a wd 16h. The engine and gearbox are now mounted in the frame buy when I try to fit the primary chaincase back plate it is bolted tight to the crankcase but does not go far enough in at the rear, It looks like the foot rest spacer tube is stopping the case from going in far enough, is there different lengths of these tubes?. both tubes are identical. mine are 4" long with the stop washer 1 1/2" from the frame end Thank you.

tube length
thanks for your reply Richard, the dogs on the tubes are fitting into the engine plates perfectly. I will have to investigate further, Thanks again.

Seals
There should be a leather or rubber seal between inner case and crankcase which will push the front out a little and in consequence bring the rear in a bit, if it's pivoting on the footrest tube..I'm not sure that it's enough to help though.
There are absolutely no spacers to misplace in mounting the 16H engine, gearbox and plates. I'm at a loss beyond that if everything is straight.

Pre-war civilian Nortons of the post-vintage (generally speaking Edgar Franks redesign) era have the footrest tubes welded to the engine plates. Presumably in order to aid replacement if damaged, War Office machines changed very early-on to have detachable tubes. I believe this was a return to the 1920s practice. I don't know what was used after the war.
The correct length of the chaincase side tube is indeed roughly 4" with the supporting flange 1 5/8" from the engine plate.
Are the "dogs" on the footrest tube engaging correctly with the slots in the engine plates ?
