Hi folks,
During lockdown I have decided to check the valve gear timing on my 16h. On taking off the side cover I found that there is a shim on the shaft of the exhaust cam gear separating the Bush on the outer case and the gear face. This is not present on the inlet gear.
Does anyone know if this shim is correct or something a previous owner has slid on to take up slop. I can't find any diagrams or images that are detailed enough to clarify this either way.
I haven't run a mic across it yet but it's around 4 tho.
The gears themselves run as a train so the pre 48 type.
Regards
Rodge.

It's quite...
... easy to measure endfloat on the inlet cam but harder on the exhaust. I used some plastigauge on a Matchless G80 I had which had rattly cams - didn't need more than .002" or so. Shims are fairly widely available although mostly metric sizes.

This is normal practice to shim the end float on both cams where necessary to compensate for any wear on the bronze bushes. Both Franks and Garrett discuss it in their books. Shims normally are fitted between the cam and the outer cover.
