jubilee clutch lever

Forums

Could one of the experts on here tell me what the fix is for this clutch lever not engaging untill the cable is pulled realy tight ?

Something must be worn as you have to pull it virtually 90 degrees for it to work and it would be impossible with one hand, Ive just been pulling the cable with mole grips to get it to work.

Many thanks

1) Your 2nd photo is incorrect - the clutch lever at the gearbox end would not adopt the angle you show while at rest. Rather, it may be at an angle of 45° or so.

2) By the time the lever is in the position you show in your first photo (at right angles to the bike), the clutch should be disengaged.

So, what could be wrong?

  • The pushrod is not adjusted correctly - or
  • The pushrod is too short - or
  • The clutch centre nut has come lose and the clutch has partially come off?

Have you taken off the primary chaincase to look what is happening there?

As a first action, check if the clutch is properly secured.

If it feels OK, then with a slack cable, undo the locknut on the pressure plate, and rotate the adjuster inwards until you feel resistance, then back off half a turn, and lock it in place with the nut.

If you cannot make this adjustment, then clearly something is wrong.

There are two possibilities:

  • Is the pushrod too short? It should be 10¼" long - or
  • Is there a 3/8" ball bearing under the lever in your photos? The only way to check is to dismantle the operating mechanism. Do not lose the locating pin!

If you are still having issues, write me (email address in Roadholder) for more assistance with lots of photos.

Thanks for the advice Andy, Yes the 2 nd photo shows the lever at rest and when I pull the cable it goes to the first photo,

I removed the clutch adjuster screw from the clutch side and it looks like the push rod isnt long enough, when I pushed it through with a screw driver it put resistance on the lever at the other end so looks like the rod is worn ,

i will buy another one and report back
