Converting a Model 50 into an ES2

Forums

Has anyone attempted this? Is much work involved?

Oops! I see there is 12mm difference in stroke as well as bore diameter difference.

Hi Ian,

You can mix parts with these engines, but it is not a straight forward conversion. The easiest way would be to get a complete ES2 engine which will be a simple swap. The crankcases are inter- changeable with each other if you want to keep your original number, but you will of course need to declare the capacity to the DVLA.

If memory serves, It was a whole lot cheaper to insure a 350 in the 60's. And there was a Road Tax break at 350cc ? We were all impoverished then and the savings were significant. Bit easier to kick over than the 500 singles.

Why is it popular now? A modern 350 is fast enough isn't it? In fact, any 350, whatever the age of the machine, is a comfortable ride for today's pensioners.

I totally agree with Richard and Peter and please tell; Al Oz, in case I have missed something.

I have two Model 50's, the older being a pre F/bed with sidecar lugs on. (1957)

I am currently building up a late ES2 engine as a replacement for when my legs give up. (Take note Editor Mark, who does a brilliant job) I'll need to buy a sidecar.of course.

As a solo you would need to change (Raise) the gearing but lower still for a tug,

An exchange engine would be my advice, but don't forget about the gearing to suit, but that's another thread, in my view.

With all the cameras, restrictions and fines people did't vote for, I find the model 50's performance and 80mpg on E0 adequate, It is a very lightly stressed machine, sharing many components with the ES2 and 19S.. And yes, I do have two ES2's (F/beds) so able to make a comparison of sorts,

My take

.Neil.

I should have said an ES2 should have a larger carb.. Amal Mk - 1 - 28 mm (928 is what I use)

Again, another topic.  Drive chain  and primary length chain may differ? And the diameter of the exhaust pipe is different, though I do use an ES2 type on my slimline Mod 50 but not sure about the other way around .

Right now listen up! I(f you take the basic 4 stroke single cylinder engine, and 'do' the variables for best 'bang for your £' ie best power/economy for basic 4 stroke petrol engine). There is many variables, ie valve size, inlet/exhaust tract dimensions, valve timing, compression ratio (which dictates ignition timing) even spark energy can have an effect etc. But if we alter the CC we find there is an optimum.......350cc (would you believe) This is why Fords come up with the 1.4 lean burn. Yes you get more power from a 500 BUT 'bang for £' is reduced. So if you want to 'save the world' then stick with your 350, or get a pedal bicycle!
