Hello,
can anyone thell me the purpose of the small hook on the side
of the valve lifter of my 1924 Big 4. See picture.

Thanks a lot for Your very helpfull information. I think the long rod acts as a spring
to hold down the valve lifter. May there was no coil spring around the lifter cable in these
day.

After seeing your post my curiosity started me down a pre-war Norton rabbit hole of online image searches. Looks like a rod (maybe 1/8 in diameter) curls around back corner of engine case, travels below pivot point of exhaust lifter arm, and stays situated between lifter arm and engine case headed forward towards exhaust valve. I haven’t seen a clear picture of where it terminates though. No idea what it’s function might be either. Possibly a tension spring as it looks like it might ride against forward portion of lifter arm pivot.
I will cite Bonham’s Autumn 2019 Stafford Sale of a 1925 16H with swallow sidecar as a decent visual reference of the rod in place.
