Mikuni brainfade

Forums

I've had a Mikuni VM36 on my 850 2A for 15 years now and it has been wonderful, but over a recent extended period of work it has been off the bike and away in a cupboard. My son offered to clean it up whilst it was off - and there is my problem. I cannot get the bike to run right since I got it back together and am bugged by a simple question; The needle currently has the clip in No 3 (counting from the top) position of the 5 available. Is this correct for the stock set up? I cannot remember to save my life, but have been told that position 2 is the factory position? I originally fitted the carb exactly as it came out of the box from Allens, so if there was a factory setting, then that would what it has been - and should be again.

Also, there are 2 return springs for the round slide. Is this correct?

Thank you for your attention.

Can't answer the question about the clip or spring (sorry!) but I can say that the problem with most carbs that have been stood for a while is a blocked or partially pilot jet.

I also cannot 100% answer the question about the clip but I am sure that the centre/middle notch is correct, I cannot remember about the spring (sorry). I fitted a single Mikuni carb to my Mk3 Commando, and I think that this was bought from Allens, I have found them to be very good and they would have set up the carb according to experience/recommendations after telling them what bike it was for. Over the past year or so my Mk3 3 has been a bit of a pig when starting, choke on and it would fire and run for a very short while then it would run bad so choke off, then run bad so choke on again. I had to keep doing this until the bike was warm. As the bike had been standing for a while I stripped the carb completely and thoroughly cleaned it by blasting carb cleaner down all of the orifices and then blowing through them all with compressed air. The bike then started first kick with the choke on and when the choke was soon turned off the bike ran and ticked over beautifully. I should have done this when I first had the starting problem, carbs do not like standing for a while with any petrol or residue in them, leave it as it is and give it a really good clean.
