hi all i have just purchased a quite nice 71 (although not registered till 73 ) commando , my intention was to replicate a 750 norvil i had back in the 80,s ( cafe racer etc you get the idea ) :-) .
However this new purchase has the front end off a " yellow peril  " leg , caliper , disc , wheel etc so it would be quite nice to replicate one of the iconic cpr bikes . now some people would think this would be wrong but i wish only to make this for my personal gratification and not financial gain if you get me , a friend of my son who races classics has already asked if he could borrow the finished article to parade , hopefully on the manx but thats another thing :-)
 anyway the gist of the post is , obviously the location of the correct style tank and seat for a start :-) ive got quite a few piks of key position , rear drum vents etc but more close ups would be nice , anyway long post and any info or direction for parts would be appreciated

Andover Norton bought out Mike Hemmings' "Norvil" line.
You'll find most of the bits you need to make a look-a-like here:

Other suppliers (i.e. the one in Rugeley) also supply PR parts. And Norman White will build one for you.

These bikes were hand built to order and I doubt any two are exactly the same so you can pretty much mix 'n match to get the bike you want. Plus, they have often had a life:

cheers stan some wonderful stuff still available from A/N my bank account is taking a hit as we speak haha , strangley though alot of parts have already been fitted , hmm unfortunatley though i carnt find the key relocation bracket also the coils under seat bracket , i,m quite capable of making these if i had some kind of drawing/photos though :-) sadley however the tanks and seats are not available ( seat more importantly ) so if anyone has any info on any condition not important really as i have a good friend who could resurect a tank and posibilities of reproducing them in carbon , anyway thanx stan and any leads on a tnak/seat or the offending brackets would be appreciated :-)

p.s if i did reproduce in carbon id paint it yellow honest :-)

If I was going to build one now, I'd go for something other than yellow; too many yellow ones around. Maybe white with Castrol red/green stripes.

Anyway, there is, or used to be, one in the museum (I haven't been there since the fire). If you can fabricate parts from photographs/measurements then it would be worth a trip - £5 entry if you go on the 28th.
But there were many variations. The PR was a kit and each part was homologated separately so you could mix 'n match. And customer bikes were not always the same as the factory team's. Norman White would be able to tell you.

I have two good 3 1/2 gallon PR tanks in GRP. Let me think about whether one is surplus to requirements. Or there's a damaged one you can have FOC (1" hole in the side).

Norton produced a service release No N3/12. This service release was published in August 1972, from the Norton Technical Department, at Wolverhampton. This was for the conversion of the standard Commando models to racers. This included engine performance, parts, and also the frame and body parts. They included pictures with the relevant part numbers, and also the instructions on how to fit the relevant parts listed. The was the oil tank modifications, with all the seat, petrol tank, and fairing parts listed, along with the fitting instructions. The modification to the rear light unit with frame modifications. There is listed the rear set footrests, as well as a special exhaust pipes for the Formula 750 racers. They all come with part numbers and very detailed factory fitting instructions.
