International gear lever, laydown gearbox

Forums

Having fitted a rev counter drive to my 1955 inter, I find that the gear lever fouls the rev counter gear box and prevents me from changing gear. I removed the gear lever and replaced it moving it one spline up, It looks ridiculous in this position, even rotating the footrest hanger to a higher position it does not look right. Although it works ok, it is awkward.  Am I missing something or do I need to buy a lay down lever and apply heat to suitably bend it?

I have a photo in my collection of a featherbed Inter with rev counter, and the gear change lever is about 2" short of the rev counter gearbox.
The only drawback I know of with dolls head box is that it needs such a long lever.  By laying down the gear change mechanism, they could use a shorter change lever.  It sounds like yours is too long.

The link between positive stop mechanism and cam plate sector is prone to wear, and does not improve gear shifting.  Maybe ball joints would improve it.

I have a '56 Inter. The examples I've seen generally involve the gear change lever being heated up and neatly bent to clear the rev counter gearbox. The problem is this does the chrome no good.

What I did was to buy a cheap old gear lever with poor chrome with the intention of heating and bending that and then rechroming it. I must confess however that it's a job still outstanding for later this year or next. .

How far forward is the gearbox on it's adjustment, is it fully or near fully forward? If so take a look at both chains and by reducing the primary chain by one link, and maybe the rear chain, this may move the gearbox back enough for the gear lever to clear the rev counter.
