Inter 500 CC Crankshaft bearing

Forums

Hello, Im building a single knocker 500 and I would like to get some information on the timing side main bearing?  I dont have a sample but Im led to belive that it should be a double row ball race.

Any info will be much appreciated....

Thanks     Philip

If you are building an engine, you might find Paul Norman's 'racingvincent' website helpful.  He covers a complete SOHC engine build, in stages.  Also do you have the downloads from 'vintagenorton' site?

Hi Philip,

The magnesium racing SOHC crankcases use a double ball self aligning metric bearing 62mm outer, 25mm inner and 24mm width. The aluminium road spec. crankcases use a single ball imperial bearing 2.5 inches outer, 1 inch inner and .75 inch width.

So is it safe to assume that the Manx crankshaft bevel is shorter to allow for the wider bearing?
Manx at 24mm = 0.9449" - 0.75" of the Inter bearing. So 0.1949" shorter bevel gear.
Am I being too simplistic?

Cheers Paul

Do you have the length of the Manx gear?

Hi All, and Philip,
Sorry . . . only just seen this, and dont get much time for Social media stuff .  . .

Still doing all the SOHC stuff and although my daughter has been off for last 7 months (diabetes issues and maternity . . . am now a grandad!) . . .I am still available to answer any questions if required - and can still do most SOHC parts.
Bearings are getting increasingly difficult (I normally only source original UK manufactured and now obsolete bearings) .  . but even if out of stock - I will advise what to look for . . .and can supply almost any bearing, even if showing out of stock . .. but at a price (I know where they are being held).
If you wish to email me - as at May 2024 (with my daughter off) - it is paul.norman@racingvincent.co.uk . . . but bear in mind I am doing all the mail order, supplier and manufacturing stuff myself . . . so allow a few days for me to reply - and if you have not got a reply in 7 days, just email me again . . . only so many hours in the day!!

I am always updating site with new products - not just SOHC, but OHV/SV as well (much CNC manufactured in-house) and subscribe to my newsletter . . . when I do them!!

Chrs all,
Paul Norman

and hello Richard . . . always good to see another 'old un' still active!

Hi all,

Just re-opening this thread for Paul Nicholls query.

Hi Paul Norman, sorry to be formal, but a bit confusing with the same name !    Perhaps we will catch up at Banbury or Founders Day if you are going. Best wishes to your recently expanded family, so even less time now ??

Hi Paul,

Yes the maths add up, although you might have a job getting it to 1/10,000th inch.!!      Realistically, with the Inter and Manx having different crankcase castings and variations over the years, you will need to assemble the shortened gear ( sorry, I don't have the measurement) on the shaft then check where the vertical bevel drops onto the crank bevel. There are variations from one engine to another so each needs to be shimmed individually and these shims are available from Paul at    www.RacingNorton.co.uk
