Fuel tank for 70 S Code Commando

Hi,
Hopefully importing a 70 S code and assuming I need to replace the fibreglass tank.

Is there a difference in the tank shape to later Roadsters and if there is, where would I get a replacement steel or fibreglass one?

Bike has yet to be shipped so could possibly come over with it if there is a supplier stateside.

Leads on suppliers of the blue metalflake paint would be useful too.

Can't comment on shape differences but the best Roadster tank is the steel Emgo version made in Taiwan. Sold in the UK by a few vendors.

I have a 1970 Commando Roadster, which is an S type but with out the high pipes. My one came with the original fibre glass petrol tank, and it was showing signs of it leaking. I bought a steel one from ANIL, and had it painted and it looks great. The only difference is that the later one, has a rear fixing which is a bracket that goes under the top frame tube and not two buttons at the back of the petrol tank. The 1969, 1970 Commando S type and Roadsters had their own hand book, which i had, for many years before i bought my Commando. The S type also has a supplement in one of the parts books, but not its own parts book, for 1969-1970. I always wanted an earlier Roadster, as i rode them when they were new, when i worked at Gus Kuhn Motors, back in 1969 to 1970. I also managed to put together, a complete tool kit for my Commando, after many years of searching for the original items.

Thanks for confirming preferred Repro tank. Tempted to try reburbishing but unless its in really good condition am not sure if I have the skill and patience to reline it.

Anthony- need pictures of the 70 S please!

The fibre tanks do have a different shape and they're always visibly different but the same tank was used on the Roadster and they were sold fibre and steel together for a while in different markets so to Norton, they were interchangeable.

The steel tank that looks most like the fibre was used on the '75 Mk3 850s as it seems that they lost the press tooling and made a batch of fully-welded tanks with no seam behind the headstock.

As an origtinal owner of a new 70 Roadster I wonder about this statement? Sorry I did not keep it. Which is a noteable story in it's self.

The only real; issue is was the chrome air filter and silver metal flake tail light housing consistant for both? I do not think so, but not sure.

I currently own 2 series 1 commando's and am building one as "S" and the second as a "clone" of my first commando I owned in 1970.

The "S" front fender (bridge) and stays are a one model only item. "S" is definitely shorter than standard commando bridge and stays. Tank colors and decals were the only difference I could notice
