Jubilee front brakes

Hi,

Just started to sort out the front end on my Jubilee jigsaw ( I have a mixture of late and early parts), and after looking through some old magazine articals I noticed the front brake mounted on the left side and on others its mounted on the right hand side.

What are your thoughts on this:- Is this year specific

Does it make any difference

I also noticed there are two routes for the speedo cable one goes straight up and along the top frame tubes the other runs parallel

along the bottom frame and up the front down tube!

It has been almost 50 years since I owned my Jubilee, but as far as I can remember the front brake was on the right. I think the speedo cable should run along the bottom frame tube and up the front tube. The other arrangement was something done by some owners. My bike was a 1960 model from what I remember.

Hi Colin,

Thats what I thought but in the Roy Bacon book(Norton twins) it shows a picture of a standard Jubilee with the brake on the left and the speedo going up to the top tube.This looks like a factory artist impression of a later model that why I thought it may be year specific.thanks for your reply.

Hi David,

I have only ever seen the Jubilee with the brake on the right as shown in the 'Models / Lightweight / Jubilee' pictures.

Also I cannot see how the speedo cable can go along the top frame tube and then go into the bottom of the speedo. You would need a right angle drive.

Hi Tony,

Just purchased Motor cycle 5 aug 1965 for the riders report on the Jubilee and it shows the front brake on the left ! there is also a picture of a deluxe at the Earls Court in 1958 what looks like the brake on the right !! It must have swaped over at some time in the production,do you think this could have been when production moved from Bracebridge to Woolwich .It also shows the speedo going up to the top frame.

Just found this forum while sorting out my front brake cable. When changing gear I usually adjust engine speed whilst moving the gear lever, so how do you operate throttle at the same time as operating the clutch if the clutch lever is on the right hand side with the front brake being on the left?
So I am going to stick with my brake on the right hand side, if braking I am not operating the throttle!
Speedo cable? it does hang down a bit underneath so I might try putting it along the top, but there are quite a few electrics up there.
Does this sound reasonable?

John i think you might be misunderstanding, the question is about which side the brake drum is on, not the lever, if the brake is on the left (as sat on the bike) the cable can cross from the left side of the front wheel to the right hand lever.

You are obviously correct thanks Dan, I am relieved about that! Except a longer cable would required perhaps, or is that why my cable seems over long?
As long as it works, that's the important thing. John

Please remember when quoting Roy Bacon he was an Author NOT a Norton motorcyclist. 
Pg 85 shows the Jubilee with indeed the front brake/drum on the LHS, but it is NOT a transposed picture as the gear change is still on the RHS. But we have a missing kick start rubber!! Why do we put up with missing kick start rubbers??
So let us wait for Andy Socks to pop up and inform us where the front brake should be? Bear in mind there will/should be an anchor point on the fork leg!? Did the Fork leg change sides?

I'm sure this has been discussed before.
I'm no 'marque specialist', but a quick internet search of same era James Captains/Francis Barnett Falcons show brakes on both sides. Did those marqes change factories at a similar time?Pre 1960 pictures seem to be mostly left side brake plate, later on the right. 
As Al says, where is the brake anchor arm fixing?
Again, Andy probably will have a 'best answer' for this.
