I have a 1946 Model 18 which I have owned since 1982 and which was last on the road in November 1988. I have a 'new style' logbook, that is to say the first blue DVLA replacement for the original logbook. I don't have the latest type of logbook and the bike is not on SORN. My understanding was that there was no requirement to either request the latest type logbook or to declare SORN because the bike has not been on the road since SORN came into effect and the bike is on the DVLA records having been issued with a blue logbook.
I've just seen info that seems to imply that this is not the case and that I am in danger of losing my Reg. No,
Can anyone advise. I'm keen for clarification before approaching the DVLA which I need to do as the bike will be back on the road later this year.
Any info appreciated.

I've been through exactly…
I've been through exactly this fairly recently & on initial enquiries with DVLA was told I'd have to apply for retention of an original registration, which involved club dating letters & proof the registration mark belonged to the vehicle concerned & a fee. However, I had checked the reg on the DVLA vehicle checker site here
https://www.taxdisc.direct.gov.uk/EvlPortalApp/app/enquiry?execution=e1s1
& found it's details were there. I used this argument to suggest if I could find it's details on a public web site, surely that was proof enough? The nice chap I spoke to at DVLA agreed & was very helpful & told me to fill in any relevant changes on the old V5, send it in to them & they would issue a new V5c. The only thing he couldn't do was change the taxation class at the same time, I had to do that separately once I'd received the new V5c.
As Gordon says, give them a ring, they are human & in my many experiances with them are usually very helpful

On a similar theme, but moving from Richard's direct question: I have a Red V5C for a pre-1960 Norton issued a couple of years ago, but the taxation class is "not licensed". I believe I need to get that changed to "Historic" before I can apply for a tax disc.
I have heard somewhere that the Post Office can do this (e.g. similar to changing the class for 1973/74 dated bikes, with a club dating letter). Has anyone tried it at the Post Office, and is a special form needed?
Or, if I mail it to Swansea will they require a club dating letter? Noting Tim's point above regarding the details being in the public domain, I wonder why some people are needed club dating letters to obtain a Historic taxation class?

I have a VW Beetle with a red V5C showing date of first registration 2/7/73. It was taxed, butbecame eligible for 'historic' freebie status.
Phoned DVLA and was advised and didas follows:
Filled in 'tax class' in section7 of V5C as 'historic' and signed and dated section 8. Took to Post Office (cannot remember if I took insurance certificate and MOT; old age!!!) and asked for 12 months freebie disc which they issued. They retained V5C and gave me a printed receipt. Sent off old tax disc for a refund. Have now received refund (but not for April, the then current month)and new V5c with tax class shown as 'historic vehicle'.
Hope this helps,
Richard

In the last year I have returned a couple of bikes to service which had blue V5 log books and were categorised as not licenced. There were no queries or problems. DVLA subsequently issued new V5c registration documents for them. Give them a phone call - there are real human beings on the other end of the line and they generally have lovely Welsh accents!
