Chronometric & WD40

Not generally recommended......Has been known to have fatal consequences on both the dial face and internals. Whatever the solvent inside WD40 is, it can have deadly effects if not used carefully.

You'd be better off using watch lubricant or something very lightl such as sewing machine oil.

I find WD40 evaporates and dries out leaving a thicker sticky residue which is fine if you want to use it as penetrating oil or leave it on for moisture protection, but as a long term low viscosity lubricant I would use a tiny amount of 3 In 1 oil .....apply a tiny amount with a dipped matchstick.

Solvents will dissolve the face in a heartbeat!, guess how I know. Out on the 99 a few days ago the speedo was doing all sorts of strange stuff but settled down after a few miles(I do like things that fix themselves) .Time for a strip and clean ,first time in 56 years ,unreliable old brit stuff.

Lots of valuable advice, but perhaps before advising what action to take it would be prudent to ask why do you feel the need to lubricate your speedometer?

If it is in poor overall condition then perhaps it actually needs refurbishing in which case I would highly recommend Ashley Pople. He truly is a speedo genius. He has just done one for me with new glass, bezel,trip meter cableand the correct face. It is now in "as new condition". To say I am delighted would be an understatement.

WD40 is not a lubricant,it is a water displacer hence "WD",and a solvent. It will clean off old oil or grease ,but anything needing lubricating should be oiled or greased with something appropriate after using WD40
