37 ES2 jigsaw puzzle - help needed.

Forums

Hi. This is my first crack at prewar machine, I have an A7 a B44 and a TR7V so not a complete novice but.........

The bike I am trying to assemble is a project my brother bought as a part finished project 20 years ago. It is (I believe) an ES2 chasis with a Model 50 engine. I am happy to be corrected but as far as I can see from pictures it looks like an ES2 but the engine is def a 350 from the engine markings. It is unregistered so hopefully I will get confirmation from the dating service regarding this info when I hear from them.

I desperately need someone who has these so that I might have a damn good look at it and take pics and stuff also help identifying bits would be a real help.

I also need help on where I can get some painted rims, and where would be a good place to look for cycle parts like foot rests, handlebar clamp, pattern guards, a loom.

I am fortunate in that the major bits are present and tank even has an OK paint job but I have two different rocker boxes and bags of coiled valve springs (should it have hairsprings). Sorry lots of questions really need another one to look at in detail. Thanks, Stephen in Northants

Yup, trying to sourcemanuals. Pre-war ones seem to be scarce. I know these engines continued in very much the same guise for many years. Is a manual for a later ES2 or 50 any use to me with regards to the engine. I might get away with a late engine maual and a parts book to show me what the bits should look like.

This is going to be fun.

Hi Stephen. If you give me a call on 01934 852259 I may be able to help with the Spare Parts List also if you have the frame and engine numbers I should be able to confirm details, although Chris Streather is the better source via Works records.

Regards

Bob Nicholas.

Hi, and thanks for the offer. Some close ups of the following would be a great help.

1 Battery Carrier. If you could manage a photo with and without the battery that would be excellent so i can see what the fitting looks like and how it fits on.

2 The front footrests

3 The handlebar clamp. Are the bars 7/8ths or 1".

4 Lower Front mudguard stay from both sides. I think I have most of one but it would help to be certain that I am right with this.

5 Headlight stays

6 Engine plates, but these might be ES2 as I have the cradle frame rather than the one with no piece across the bottom (sorry I am sure it has a name) so your 50 might well be different. Where I you, just in case I come close on my travela nd you wouldnot object to me haveing a closer look.

These would be immensely helpful. my e-mail address is s.m.dunne@btinternet.comI am sure I will need more and

Thanks in advance

One of the best general manuals is Edgar Franks' "Norton Motor Cycles - A practical guide covering all models from 1932"

It lists year by year changes and Franks was responsible for the 1932 redesign so he knows his stuff. You can go for the earliest version you can find but I don't think that anything was dropped when the post-war stuff was included. It's regularly on eBay, or someone like Pooks will have it.

There is no single supplier for pre-war single stuff. Russells are worth a try for parts common to WD models (which were 1936 spec.)

You're likely to find that you have to visit every jumble that you can and keep eBay monitored.

I have parts books for '37 and '38 which cover all models (I think that I've already scanned them) and I also have a lot of photographs from my 16H rebuild if you're stuck on things like wheel spacers and mudguard fittings but as you say, frames differ.

...and if you find a really good chromers who can consistently do Norton-style dull chrome, please let me know !

Thank you very much for the tip regarding the Franks book. I have kindly been passed a scanned copy of the parts book by Bob which is proving useful.

Can I add that the help I have had here in teh few days since I joined the club have been a credt to the club.

Off to the Motorcycle Museum with a camera as I believe they have an ES2 so as to compile a photo record of how it all goes together, that is when they get round to replying to my e-mail asking if they will allow me to take lots of photos and confirm that I will be able to get near the bike for thje purposes of photgraphy.

Thank you all

Hi, I have what I believe to be a 1935 ES2, pending confirmation from records. I also have a few pictures of pre-war ES2 machines that I can share. I would be interested in any manuals or parts lists for mid 30s ES2.

Cheers

Les
